Sexuality

Sexuality is probably one of the most difficult topics for parents to discuss with a young person. However, it is very important. Sex and sexuality are different things, and it’s good to be aware of this when thinking about how to talk to a young person. This issue can also be considered from the point of view of what information you would have needed when you were young. It is worth having a discussion with the young person about their own values and limits and respecting them, but also about respecting the values and limits of others.   

A course produced by the Family Federation of Finland (Väestöliitto), “Tietoa seksuaalisuudesta suomea opiskeleville” (Information about sexuality for those studying Finnish), provides information on topics such as sexual rights, what sexuality means and why it is important to know about sexuality. It is easier to talk about the subject with your young person when you have sufficient information and know the words and their meaning.
